After a difficult childhood that included a period living in a shelter, Derek “made the choice to persevere.” Inspired by a teacher, he improved his grades and became involved in community service. He tutored elementary students, helped at summer recreation programs, and was active in a youth program to clean and revitalize his hometown of Sanford.
Derek decided not to let his situation get the best of him; instead, he decided to make a difference and became a role model in the school and community. He transformed from a shy kid to an enthusiastic young person who worked hard to help those in his school, as well as the town.
Derek enrolled in the University of Maine.
