Cassie faced significant adversity in her early childhood, eventually finding a safe and secure environment that allowed her to thrive in high school, standing at the top of her class of 125. As impressive as these accomplishments are, they are dwarfed by her non-academic achievements and daily expressions of character.
Initially a camper at Camp NEOFA, where underprivileged children are given opportunities for outdoor adventure, Cassie became a counselor and has spent the past three summers giving back. She is described as a leader of the other counselors and is the first to go to a kid sitting alone and try to help them. At camp, with both the campers and the other counselors, Cassie knows how things run right and she sticks up for that. She successfully petitioned the New England Independent Order of Odd Fellows Board of Directors to establish a fund-raiser position for the camp.
As VP of the Climate Action Club at her high school, she initiated a composting program, working with school administrators and the food service, which is now an integrated aspect of the school. She has worked for the past two years at the Green Store in Belfast which, she says, “prioritizes ethical, environmentally friendly consumerism.” Initially hired as a clerk, she has taken over their online accounts and profiles. “Environmental stewardship will always be my priority over a big salary.” Cassie has saved her earnings to apply to her college expenses.
As a student correspondent for the local newspaper, Cassie writes essays intended to implement change, provide a forum for civil discourse, and connect communities.
Cassie will attend Northeastern University.
