$5000 Timothy and Claire Heard
2024 Sacopee Valley High School
“I am really proud of all the work I have done in the last few years, and I am excited to be going to college this fall.”
Despite an extraordinarily difficult childhood, including the death of his father in infancy, removal from his mother’s home at 14, the death of his beloved grandmother a year later, and a bicycle accident that left him with a head injury that has made academics a challenge for him, Shane has quietly and effectively persevered.
With the love and support of his self-described “amazing” Aunt Heather and his teachers he has thrived in high school, achieving honor roll, making numerous good friends, and holding a job at a local restaurant where he is highly respected and well-liked for his work ethic and sense of responsibility. He has been saving his wages for college.
Shane has notably shone in the Culinary Arts Program at Lake Regional Vocational Center where he is always the first to arrive. He also helps any student who is struggling before beginning his own work. The teacher notes that he is one of the best students in 20 years of teaching the course.
Especially compassionate when watching and listening to other students who are struggling to fit in, Shane helps them to be more comfortable and less anxious. He is modest, as well, leading his teachers and employers to express high praise.
Shane will attend Southern Maine Community College with a focus in the Culinary Arts Program.
