Despite many obstacles, she will be the first in her family to go to college.
From the age of five, Sarah knew she wanted a different life. Her story is one of taking responsibility when others have failed in their support, maintaining integrity despite temptations, displaying a courage to persist while still demonstrating a concern for others. As Sarah related, “No matter how many times I’ve been knocked down, It’s my choice to get up.”
After the unexpected death of her father, Sarah found herself scared for the future, scared for those she loved, and filled with anxiety. But she did not give in or give up. To strengthen herself, she moved out of her home, worked three jobs to support herself, participated in a sport for the first time and studied to get good grades. While Sarah focused on supporting herself she steadfastly continued to support her family. Demonstrating an inspiring inclination to give back, Sarah even volunteered in a Bangor shelter to help others who faced similar problems.
Sarah will be the first of her siblings to graduate from high school. She is headed well beyond this goal; in the fall she will enter the University of Maine intending to major in Anthropology.
