Ava Chadbourne

2021 Fryeburg Academy

$2500 Scholarship Sponsored by an Anonymous Donor

I am not broken. I am not wrong. I am me.

Ava was an active member of the Fryeburg Academy Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA). In her senior year the organization challenged a Fryeburg Academy tradition requiring white graduation robes for girls and blue for boys. This effectively excluded all gender non-binary students and could ‘”out” a trans student against their will. Despite opposition from a few outspoken parents, Ava’s tireless advocacy resulted in a change of practice.

As captain of the Robotics Club, Ava led problem-solving efforts and volunteered to help build a new robotics lab. With these skills, she offered to create a database to store records for the town of Sweden.
